I really enjoyed the 2007 movie, partly because I like those two actors and partly because I realized half-way through that I actually have a bucket list and didn’t realize it. Some of the entries are:
1. Learn to fly – I’ve always wanted to do this since I was a kid and I’m not a kid anymore.
2. Learn to fish – not bored out of my skull in a boat, but at the edge of a mountain stream, with line and hook arcing overhead, just like the guys who actually know what they’re doing.
3. Scuba dive at least once. I’ve wanted to do this since a snorkeling day in Baja California, where I experienced hundreds of wildly colorful fish, one scary barracuda and a nearly terminal sunburn.
4. I used to love to ski, but I’ve never snow boarded.
5. I would love to hike all 211 miles of The John Muir Trail, in the California Sierra mountains.
6. I’d like to get adopted by another dog. I sort of ended up with one, as a kid and we were inseparable. Check out that post – you’ll learn everything you wanted to know about her. She was the best. I’d like serendipity to get me together with another little canine buddy.
7. Visit Thailand at least once and see Vienna, in the Winter time.
8. I grew up around rifles and shotguns, on the farm, but I don’t know anything about hand guns. I would like to get some training on the proper use of a handgun.
9. I want to go to a Jimmie Buffet concert, before he retires.
10. I would like to spend Christmas in New York City.
11. I want to buy a BMW motorcycle and drive it across the USA.
12. If I can’t hike the John Muir Trail, I would at least like to go backpacking, again. I used to do it all the time, but it’s been at least 30 years since I hiked so many miles from civilization that the sound of a high jet aircraft was actually startling. I want to pitch a tent at the edge of a high mountain lake, make my bed inside, gather some wood and make a fire and cook a simple dinner, while I watch the sunset fade into darkness, watch the moon slowly rise in the sky, while I listen to the evening sounds, smell the forest smells, feel the evening breeze and the heat from my fire and feel that prickling in the hairs on my neck, when I hear a coyote howl in the distance, knowing there is danger on the mountain and we are all out there together -just me and the animals. Wow. What amazing memories. Someday, I should tell you the story of when a buddy and I got visited in the middle of the night by a brown bear, looking for food. Funny, actually. My friend almost had a heart attack. I was incredibly brave.
13. Try eating haggis, at least once.
14. Ride the Orient Express all the way from London to Prague, alternating my time on board between reading Agatha Christie in my compartment and socializing with other passengers in the Lalique dining car and the bar car.
I have a feeling there are more noble or interesting things that should go on my list. What are your thoughts? What’s on your list?
Jim!
You missed New York in Christmas the past two years I have been here! I’m a perfect NY guide, but I am only here for a few more weeks so I can only offer e-tips when you make it out here for the holidays.
Chris and I are semi-decent snowboarders. If you go with Chris he will tell you to point your board down the mountain and not fall over. If you go with me I will probably draw a diagram in the snow and talk about flexion and extension. Pick your poison.
Way too many x’s in “flexion and extension.” Chris’ method makes more sense to me. Sorry.
last week our class held a similar discussion about this topic and you show something we have not covered yet, appreciate that.

Hope you’re enjoying the West Coast. I like your bucket list. I could help you with 4 or 5 things on your list, including snowboarding, flying, fishing, and using a handgun. Hope you’re doing well.
